• A Voice of Terror
    By: Darrian Fields

I woke up, tired and unmotivated, hearing the annoying buzzing sound of my alarm clock and looked at the time. I got up slowly, turning off my alarm clock in the process and prepared to go to school yet again. As much as I’d love to stay home and do nothing I really should pass, “The sooner I’m out of this school the better”, I thought to myself as I stepped through the shower curtains. I made my shower last, relishing the warmth of the water. I stepped out of the shower feeling refreshed and at ease for the moment. I then proceeded to put on my clothes. I looked in the mirror admiring the way I looked and combed my jet black hair. My parents were from India but I was born in America so my skin was light brown but my accent was never strong. I lived in the city and my school is pretty close so I never really have to depend on anyone for transportation. I couldn’t get transportation anyway because of my parent’s work schedule which was causing some problems here at home. Lately I have been inside more often because I don’t really like my little group of friends, they seem too close-minded. As I walked to my school a soft voice called out to me saying, “Help me, I need you, Help me!” The voice was coming out of an alley across the street from me, but it seemed like only I heard it. I decided I should go check it out to see if anyone needed help but was stopped when my friend Cory grabbed me and pulled me away, out of the alley.

“Hey John how’s it going haven’t seen you in a while, you’ve been all silent and detached from everyone”

“I’ve been alright, Gotta few things on my mind at the moment, you know just family things really”, I said with a downbeat tone

“Alright man just let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. I got to hurry man I have to get to the school early to do a quick cram session for Jenkins test”

“I’ll meet you there then, peace”. With that he started running in the direction of the school and I continued my slow stride to school. As I neared the school I started to hear that voice again, it scared me considering that the alley that I first heard it in was a couple of blocks away. I got a bit paranoid and I thought someone may be stalking me so I started to walk a bit faster, but the voice just kept getting louder. I was about 3 minutes away from my school but the voice kept getting louder and louder eventually screaming “Help Me! Why are you ignoring me I need you”. The voice was panicked and frantic now and as I looked around no one was there but yet the voice still echoed through my mind. I started running to get into the school and the voice chased me screaming at this point but yet only I could hear it. “Why are you running, HELP ME!” I ran into the school with a look of fear in my eyes and although I should have cared about the dozens of eyes of students staring questioning why I was like this, I couldn’t. I could only think about the voice which stopped as I went inside the building. I went to my class as I normally would but couldn’t pay attention. I was looking for a way to explain to myself how it’s possible for no one else to hear that voice. I got little to no work done during that class and the rest of the classes were the same. In my last period class my teacher Mr. Jenkins noticed and decided to talk to me

“Hey, what’s wrong your not paying attention and you look a little paranoid”

“On my way to school today I heard a voice, a voice that sounded terrified and hurt but it had no source. It followed me here”

“Do you think someone followed you?”

    “I don’t know I didn’t see anyone”

“Well I will take you home then, ok?. You should really tell your parents about this and don’t let it get in your way of school”. He said as he picked up the papers he got today and started to head out the door. I followed him, grateful for the free ride but still weary of the mysterious voice. On the ride home nothing happened and everything seemed to be fine. My parents came home and I told them about what happened today and they seemed generally concerned for me, and said they would call the cops to see if anyone was in trouble. I went upstairs and plopped down on my head and started to fall asleep.

“WHY DIDN’T YOU HELP ME?” I shot up frenzied and panicked, I was in my house I shouldn’t be able to hear and then I heard it again “WHY WOULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?” Something in my head told me to run out the house and I did. I ran through the now dwindling streets and guessed it was around 2 or 3 in the morning. I was afraid, that voice never left, and now it sounded angry. As I was running I saw a woman just standing there, she then looked up to me and asked “Am I pretty?” .I replied “yes” And then she took off her mask revealing that her mouth was cut from ear to ear. When she opened her mouth half her face opened with it revealing a set of demonic looking teeth and blood dripping from her mouth and she said “How about NOW!”

I panicked and ran as fast as I could towards his house, the woman following closely behind with a large pair of shears in one hand and a demonic look in her face. She caught up to me and ripped through the shirt I had on and I felt a searing pain as her inhuman claws dug deep into my flesh, leaving a bleeding wound. Trying my best to ignore the pain I ran through a building and started knocking on apartment doors but no one came to the door. The woman was still staring at me taunting me as she slowly moved towards me, the shears still covered in my blood. I ran towards the back exit and turned quickly hoping to run into someone. The woman had seemed to disappear and I thought I was safe.

As I reached my block she suddenly appeared, and I ran into a nearby alley but I was to slow as she swung her shears at my legs leaving a gash there. I crawled in pain looking at her. She stared back and said “ANSWER ME, AM I PRETTY OR NOT?” and Cut my other knee, the blood oozing onto my flesh. I finally said “Yes, Yes you are” afraid if I said no she would surely kill me. Tears starting to fall from my face as I stared at her gruesome maw, the blood pouring from her mouth onto my butchered legs, and then she just left. I weakly limped to my house trying to resist giving in from the pain and blood loss and finally reached my door. Just as I started to ring the doorbell she appeared and said “ You liar” and the last thing I saw was her shears cutting my mouth to resemble hers and then cutting me down right then and there and then there was nothing.
